The Hacktivists Are Coming After Elon Musk
Aside from being the billionaire who plans to send humans to Mars, Elon Musk has made a name for himself for irreverently influencing the already volatile crypto market. Cryptocurrencies rise and fall with a few Musk Tweets under 140 characters, and it seems some netizens have had enough.
Over the weekend, a video allegedly from the hacktivist movement Anonymous went viral for warning Musk that “they” are coming for him. “They” being the international movement known for large-scale cyber-attacks against institutions, corporations, and governments.
It’s suspected that thousands, if not millions, are part of the movement, which has targeted the likes of child pornography sites, big corporations like PayPal, the Israeli government, and even the U.S. government. And it looks like Elon Musk appears to be the latest target for this global collective.
Musk has confirmed his irrefutable influence over the crypto market in recent months when just a few of his Tweets were enough to soar or sink prices of cryptocurrencies, causing many investors to start criticizing Musk’s erratic posts and irreverent consideration of his power over crypto.
“It seems that the games you have played with the crypto markets have destroyed lives,” said the voice in the Anonymous video. “Your Tweets show a clear disregard for the average working person. As hardworking people have their dreams liquidated over your public temper tantrums, you continue to mock them with memes from your million-dollar mansions.”
The video went so far as to attack Musk’s character, stating that, “People are beginning to see you as nothing more than another narcissistic rich dude who is desperate for attention. It appears that your quest to save the world is more rooted in a superiority and savior complex than it is in actual concern for humanity.”
If that wasn’t enough, the video also dismisses his celebrity as “the CEO who has gained a cult following through shitposting and trolling the world on social media.”
The normally outspoken Musk hasn’t directly spoken out to refute the hit job video, but he did Tweet this:
At the end of the video, Anonymous warned. “You may think you are the smartest person in the room, but now you have met your match. We are Anonymous. We are Legion. Expect us.”
We can only guess what’s going through Musk’s mind right now, but we’re pretty sure Tesla and SpaceX are fortifying their digital shields in preparation for a cyber-attack.
There’s already plenty of debate over whether the video is actually from Anonymous, as some factions of the global organization deny involvement, like the Twitter accounts of YourAnonNews and BscAnon, yet YourAnonCentral confirmed Anonymous’ ties to the threatening public video.
Either way, the video did succeed in raising concerns on just how far we should let one man influence an entire market.
