Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott Are Among the Biggest Philanthropists of 2020

These are the men and women who have given away serious dollars in the U.S.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy's Philanthropy 50 is out. On its 21st year, the annual ranking lists down the men and women who have given away serious dollars in the U.S. Just how serious are we talking about? $24.7 billion in total.

At $10.1 billion, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos topped the list as he launched the Bezos Earth Fund which aims to reduce greenhouse gases and slow climate change. While his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott figured at the second spot for donating $5.7 billion. The two make up over half of the total amount donated by the top U.S. philanthropists.

The ranking includes leaders in business and tech. Here are the top 10 biggest philanthropists from The Chronicle of Philanthropy's Philanthropy 50.

In recent years, the spotlight has shifted to donors of color. "When I look at the events of the last year, there was an awakening for the philanthropic sector,” says president of the National Center for Family Philanthropy Nick Tedesco. "Donors supported community-led efforts of recovery and resiliency, particularly those led by people of color."
