Hans Sy, Jr. Takes the Lead in Bike-Friendly Initiative at SM Mall of Asia

With more and more people choosing to bike instead of taking public transportation during the pandemic, Hans Sy, Jr, president of SM Engineering, Design, and Development, hopes “to promote a culture of cycling.”

Over the weekend, he kicked off a project he has been spearheading himself—from conceptualization to development—building a network of bike lanes on all roads in the MOA Complex stretching up to 18 kilometers, including a dedicated bike lane along J.W. Diokno.
Visible bike-centric road signs have been installed for riders and motorists for easy and orderly routing within the complex.
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, also a cycling enthusiast, attended the launch of the SM initiative. In 2016, Nograles filed House Bill No. 174, which seeks to institutionalize bicycle lanes and bikeways on all roads and highways in the country.
As part of the initiative, MOA is providing more bike parking slots and installing repair stations, a helmet depository, and bike supply and refreshment stations.
“We have designed our bike facilities to be enjoyed by all members of the community across all ages and biking abilities, whether it be for utilitarian or recreational purposes,” said Sy, Jr. “SM hopes that this will encourage more people to take up biking as a healthy and environment-friendly mode of transportation.”
The initiative will be rolled out across all SM malls nationwide in the coming months.
