As a child, Emerson Yao loved to paint. He reveled in mimicking his father, Yao E. Chiu, a classmate and friend of the master Ang Kiukok.
“My father was not known outside his circle of friends, because early on he decided to be an entrepreneur and help in the family business,” said Emerson, managing director of Lucerne, the nation’s largest luxury watch purveyor.
When E. Chiu put down his paintbrush and channeled his passion into marketing timepieces, Emerson did too. The last time he remembers dabbling in painting was when he was in high school, over 30 years ago.
Emerson has run the world’s major marathons and gets his adrenalin fix by running as often as he can. When the lockdown started, he felt very antsy and restricted at home. That’s when he put away his running shoes and set up his easel, canvas, and tubes of paint in the family dining room.
“The lockdown gave me the opportunity to rekindle my love for drawing and painting,” he says. “I still need to devote a lot more time to polish my skills and learn new ones. After ECQ, I plan to take more lessons as there are many techniques I need to learn to improve my work.”
