The year 2018 has been an eventful one, especially for the country’s richest. The wealthiest people in the Philippines as ranked by US magazine Forbes have all been the subject of several business news all throughout the year, with some being more popular than others.

To find out which tycoon got the most media coverage over the past year, Esquire Philippines took a look at the number of times each tycoon’s name appeared in the news found in search engine Google, through its Google Alerts feature. We only included items posted from January 1, 2018 until time of writing, December 26, 2018.

We found out that Henry Sy Sr. is not only the country’s richest but also the most popular in the media among the top 10 wealthiest tycoons in the Forbes’ this year. His name appeared 322 times, 19 percent more than the second in the list.

Lucio Tan comes second with 270 results, while Ramon Ang follows closely with 200.

Tony Tan Caktiong, owner of the country’s biggest fast-food chain Jollibee Foods Corp. (JFC), had the least media coverage with only 28 news items. But JFC ranked third most popular among all the main firms of the tycoons in the list with 239 resultseven besting SY’s SM Investments Corp.

JFC had a pretty busy year, what with all the acquisitions it made. In May the fast-food giant announced that it invested around Php1.74 billion to the franchise holders of the Tim Ho Wan brand in the Asia-Pacific region, then in September it again made a $12.4-million investment in US-based Mexican food concept Tortas Frontera LLC. And just this December, JFC announced that it has taken 100-percent control of US-chain Smashburger.

The country’s third richest man John Gokongwei Jr. ranks second to last in terms of media popularity, but his holding firm JG Summit Holdings ranks sixth.
