There's A Pretty Huge Chance that Elon Musk Will Be Earth's First Trillionaire

As we’ve witnessed from the sidelines over the last few months, the world’s two richest men—Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Tesla’s Elon Musk—are duking it out in the commercial space race. ROSCOSMOS and NASA made milestones in the scientific space frontier, but now the focus is on commercial space travel, which is expected to balloon into a trillion-dollar industry in the future.

Naturally, the richest men are fighting to dominate the commercial space industry so they can get, well, richer. But it’s clear that one is ahead of the other.

Elon Musk, who is already worth $241 billion, could become the planet’s first-ever trillionaire, according to analysts at investment bank Morgan Stanley. Musk made his fortune from Tesla, but we wouldn’t be surprised if SpaceX becomes his prime source of income in the next decade.

SpaceX, which has partnered with NASA numerous times, is “challenging any preconceived notion of what was possible and the timeframe possible, in terms of rockets, launch vehicles, and supporting infrastructure," said Adam Jones of Morgan Stanley.

“More than one client has told us if Elon Musk were to become the first trillionaire ... it won’t be because of Tesla. Others have said SpaceX may eventually be the most highly valued company in the world—in any industry.”

Huge investors are becoming more and more intrigued by SpaceX, which is about to launch the reusable Starship rockets that could take humanity to the moon, Mars, and beyond. SpaceX is currently pegged at $100 billion, the biggest privately-held company in the world, but that could soon skyrocket (no pun intended) to $200 billion or even higher.

“As one client put it, ‘talking about space before Starship is like talking about the internet before Google,’” said Jones.
