In a statement posted to his Twitter account, COMELEC Chairman Andres Bautista has announced his intention to resign by the end of the year.

"After much prayer and discernment, I believe that this is the right time to step down given the postponement of the Barangay and SK elections. This was not an easy decision. But my family, especially my children, need me now more than ever," he explains.

Over the past few months Bautista has been embroiled in controversy, with his wife Patricia Bautista accusing him of possessing one billion pesos' worth of undeclared wealth. On September 20, the House Committee dismissed an impeachment complaint filed against him, citing insufficiency in form. Before the complaint was junked, six COMELEC commissioners, namely Christian Robert Lim, Al Parreño, Luie Tito Guia, Arthur Lim, Rowena Amelia Guanzon, and Sheriff Abas had urged Bautista to resign.

In his letter, Bautista thanked his "COMELEC family" for standing by him: "I am thankful for the love, prayers, and support you have shown me, most especially during my most challenging times. Amid the hurt, baseless, and malicious accusations hurled against me, most of you never left my side."

He also stated his belief tht he has served the commission and the Filipino people well, citing the success of the May 2016 automated National and Local elections as a "testament to our collective sacrifices and teamwork, as it was hailed by independent local and foreign observers as the best managed and most credible in our electoral history."
