The U.S. Just Donated 2.7 Million Doses of Pfizer Vaccines to the Philippines
As the COVID-19 cases surge again in the Philippines, the United States has donated more vaccines to the country through the COVAX facility. At least 2.5 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccines arrived in Manila on January 9.
The U.S. is the largest donor to the COVAX facility
The U.S. is currently the largest donor of vaccines to the COVAX facility. The Philippines is among the largest recipients of vaccines through COVAX. According to a Manila Bulletin report, the United States has facilitated the delivery of over 65 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to the Philippines, including nearly 25 million doses provided by the American people.
The Pfizer-Biontech vaccines donated to the Philippines are part of the 500 million doses the U.S. is making available through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) facility.
“Thanks to recent deliveries, the COVAX facility and the United States have exceeded our goal of providing enough doses to vaccinate one-in-five Filipinos. We will continue to provide more safe and effective life-saving vaccines to our Filipino friends, partners, and allies as we work to end the COVID-19 pandemic together,” said U.S. Embassy in the Philippines Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Heather Variava.
U.S. COVID-19 Assistance to the Philippines
According to USAID, the Philippines has received more than P1.9 billion in pandemic response aid from the U.S., which were disbursed through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Defense, and State Department.
The development assistance aimed to fund COVID-19 testing, crucial care, communication campaigns, training of health workers, vaccine deployment, procurement of personal protective equipment and other supplies.
On top of its COVID-19 assistance to the Philippines, the U.S. has also allocated more than P1 billion in aid for the victims of Super Typhoon Odette.
