Is Bongbong Marcos Running for President in 2022?
Former senator Bongbong Marcos, the son of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., is planning to run for a national post next year, saying all partnerships for the 2022 elections were still on the table since the political situation remains "very unclear."
Marcos, who lost by a small margin in the 2016 vice presidential race, said he is studying his support base before deciding on what post to run for, noting that he is among the top contenders in surveys on possible presidential candidates. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is the frontrunner in the polls.
"I'm coming close to a decision but we're not there yet," he said during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay virtual forum.
Asked about the chance of being Duterte-Carpio's running mate, Marcos replied: "Everything is possible right now."
"The only thing that’s impossible is me running with Sen. Ping or with Tito Sen because they’re already clear," he said referring to Senators Ping Lacson and Tito Sotto who have already announced their tandem.
Duterte-Carpio has yet to announce her 2022 election plans but has confirmed receiving offers from vice-presidential aspirants Senators Bong Go and Sherwin Gatchalian. Her father President Rodrigo Duterte however has announced plans to run for vice president--a first for a Philippine leader.
"We are all waiting to see what she (Duterte-Carpio) decides to do. We are all waiting to see what all the other potential presidential candidates are going to do," Marcos said.
