Bongbong Marcos Met With a High-Ranking U.S. State Department Official. Here's What They Talked About

In just a few more weeks, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will take his oath as the next President of the Philippines. The inauguration will be held at the National Museum in Manila. Various world leaders have already reached out to him to offer their congratulations, including the likes of Presidents Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Joe Biden of the U.S. Marcos Jr. has also met with various ambassadors, including those from Japan, Korea, Germany, and France

On Thursday, the President-elect had a meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who happens to be the highest-ranking State Department official to visit the country during the pandemic.

Sherman and Marcos'  meeting focused on strengthening ties between the two countries, the state of economic affairs, and rule of law. The Deputy Secretary also met with Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez, incoming Executive Secretary Victor Rodriguez, and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro.

Details of the meeting were also revealed by Spokesperson Ned Price on the US Embassy website.

"Deputy Secretary Sherman congratulated President-Elect Marcos on his election," the spokesperson wrote. "The President-elect and Deputy Secretary agreed on the importance of partnering together to strengthen our economies, including the importance of public-private partnerships, clean energy and our digital economy."

Sherman and Marcos Jr. also discussed the importance of the US-Philippine alliance with the common goal of security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The conversation also highlighted the "importance of fostering respect for human rights and rule of law in the Philippines."
