Cayetano Breaks His Silence, Blames ‘Flip-Flopping’ of NTC and ‘Meddling’ of SolGen Calida
Two days after ABS-CBN’s shutdown by order of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has finally broken his silence on the issue.
“We were all ambushed by the NTC,” defended Cayetano, who went on to explain that Congress prioritized more pressing issues, such as the Taal Volcano eruption and COVID-19, before ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal.
The speaker went on to lambast NTC for breaking its word to Congress that it would issue ABS-CBN a provisional authority until Congress could reach a final decision.
“Despite their assurance given under oath. Despite the legal opinion of the Department of Justice. Despite a resolution from the Senate and several verbal and written assurance given to Congress, NTC appears to have succumbed to pressure from the Solicitor General (Jose Calida), and issued a cease and desist order to ABS-CBN,” stressed Cayetano.
While Cayetano blames the “sudden flip-flopping of the NTC and the unconstitutional meddling by the Solicitor General,” NTC and Calida, in turn, blame Congress for failing to renew the franchise on time.
According to Cayetano, “There will be a reckoning.”
