"It is not enough that we remember the heroes of the past, we must also pay homage to the heroes of the present. The doctors, nurses, health workers, teachers, uniformed personnel, security guards, grocery workers, delivery people, public transport drivers, everyone who’s been keeping our country running and our people safe, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice by dying in the line of duty," said Diokno, in a short live message after a Mass celebrated by retired bishop Teodoro Bacani.

Diokno also exhorted all Filipinos to step out of their comfort zones and be modern day heroes as well.

“I used to think that only a few select individuals could become heroes, but this pandemic has taught us all that anyone who puts our nation’s interests above their own, anyone who fights for a cause larger than life, anyone who serves and sacrifices for our people, can be, and is a hero,” Diokno said.

“More than a call to remember, today is a call for all of us to be heroes."

Earlier, Diokno made this comment on Facebook.
