China Slams NBC for Not Including West Philippine Sea in Its Territory During Olympics Broadcast

China expressed its displeasure to NBC when the broadcasting company did not show Taiwan and the West Philippine Sea as part of China’s territory in its broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. China said the map shown on the broadcast was “incomplete,” according to a report by Reuters.

NBC displayed maps of participating countries during their arrival in the parade of athletes. When the Chinese athletes arrived, the display did not include the West Philippine Sea, and most important, Taiwan. 

In New York, China's consul posted on Weibo that the display “hurt the dignity and emotions of the Chinese people.”

“We urge NBC to recognize the serious nature of this problem and take measures to correct the error,” it added. 

Taiwan is technically a part of China in accordance with the One China Policy recognized by the United Nations. In the sporting world including the Olympics, Taiwan uses the name Chinese Taipei. It is also referred to by this name in international events and organizations such as the World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, and APEC.
