As China finds itself at odds with a number of world powers, it finds an unlikely ally in the Taliban, a controversial Islamist movement and military organization in Afghanistan. The warming ties between Taliban and China is very telling of the latter's ambitions in the Middle East, according to the Washington Post

China's chief diplomat Wang Yi welcomed Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, head of the Afghan Taliban Political Commission. Baradar was joined by eight Taliban delegates in Tianjin on July 28.

The development comes on the heels of President Joe Biden's pullout from Afghanistan, which China has branded as hallmarks of America's failures in the war-torn country.

China's foreign ministry has assured it will not interfere in the domestic politics of the Taliban, but it warned the organization to cut ties with separatists in China's Xinjiang region.

Afghan Taliban 'An Important Military and Political Force'

In a statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry, it said "the Afghan Taliban is an important military and political force in Afghanistan and is expected to play an important role in the country's peace, reconciliation and reconstruction process."

According to the Washington Post, the Taliban has increasingly been reaching out to Asian countries looking for support in the likely expectation that it will soon run the government in Afghanistan, especially with the recent pullout of the U.S. military from the country.
