The Commission on Elections on Thursday said it was on track to reach its target of at least 61 million voters for the upcoming 2022 elections.

As of last week, Comelec has registered 4.3 million new voters, bringing the total number of registered voters to 60 million, spokesperson James Jimenez said during an online forum.

"We're expecting maybe another million in the next two months. We expect to be hitting 61 million for 2022 in time for the elections in May next year," he added.

Comelec has implemented a number of measures to get as many voter registrations as possible despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from opening satellite registration sites in various areas of the country, the commission is also set to establish registration sites in malls.

On July 12, Comelec will sign a memorandum of agreement with Robinsons Land Corp to open voter registration sites in select Robinsons Malls nationwide.

"We have to make people understand that voter registration even during the pandemic is available and is safe," Jimenez said.

"What we're doing is we're expanding the places where we can register. The end result will be you'll be able to register in more places and therefore be able to serve more people," he added.

The voter registration period will end on Sept. 30. The 2022 national and local elections are set for May 9 next year.
