Ready your jackets or cuddle buddy, it's officially the start of Amihan season in the Philippines.

Cold and dry air has been observed in the northeastern portion of Luzon which is expected to blow down to other parts of the country, state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday.

PAGASA said Filipinos could experience surges of cold temperatures in the coming months and warned that the ongoing La Niña could enhance the Amihan rainfall that could trigger floods, flash floods, and rain-induced landslides in susceptible areas.

Filipinos are advised to prepare for the said possibilities.

Amihan is the local name for the cool northeast monsoon, a major wind pattern that usually starts in the 'ber' months and lasts until February or March. The cool wind is associated with the Christmas season in the country.

When the wind patterns switch, the Philippines experiences Habagat or the southwest monsoon which is characterized by continuous heavy rains for days.
