Filthy Divisoria Street Prompts Isko Moreno to Ban Sidewalk Stalls

It wasn't too long ago that people were raving about the massive, life-changing clean-up that Divisoria went through after Isko Moreno took office, but it seems even the new administration is struggling to keep up with what is possibly Manila's—heck, probably the nation's—most popular shopping hub. After an early-morning inspection on November 11 showed Ylaya Street, which is within walking distance of the Divisoria Mall, covered in garbage, Mayor Isko Moreno has ordered all sidewalk vendors out of the area—and it looks like it's going to be a permanent arrangement.

"Hindi ba kayo nahihiya o talagang baboy kayo sa bahay?" remarked the irked Moreno, according to a Facebook post by the Manila Public Information Office. The city administration had previously allowed the vendors to sell at night in order to have a livelihood, but "Kung [ganyang basura] lang din ang iiwan sa atin araw-araw, itigil na silang lahat," said the mayor in a report by CNN Philippines.

The Manila Public Information Office (PIO) also dropped a reminder on their Facebook page soon after the inspection, reminding everyone about City Ordinance No. 8572, a.k.a. "Tapat Ko - Linis Ko," which basically mandates common decency and cleanliness. With the holidays coming up, though, here's hoping the Divisoria market is able to follow this ordinance.
