Why Doc Willie Ong Refuses to Call for Robredo Withdrawal

Isko Moreno's running mate understands why he did it.

Vice presidential candidate Willie Ong said Wednesday that unlike running mate Isko Moreno, he wouldn't ask Leni Robredo to withdraw from the presidential race, having felt what it's like to be "trolled."

It's possible that Moreno has had enough of calls for him to give way to rivals as he's "focused" on winning the elections, said Ong. With 8 percent, Moreno is statistically tied with Manny Pacquiao in third place in the March 2022 Pulse Asia survey, behind Robredo's 24 percent in second place.

"'Di ko pinapa-withdraw si VP Leni. Bakit ko naman siya ipapa-withdraw 'di ba?" he said in a Facebook video.

"Tingin ko maayos si VP Leni, tingin ko matalino siya, alam ko sinasabi ng iba hindi matalino."

He also said that while he shared the same advocacies with Robredo, "ang suporta ko kay Mayor Isko, 100%, tuloy-tuloy ito hanggang May."

Ong told his 16 million followers on Facebook that he knew the feeling of being asked to withdraw from the VP race. The doctor placed fourth in the March 2022 Pulse Asia survey.

"Hanggang ngayon lagi sinasabi magsenador ka na lang, mag-withdraw ka na lang, lipat ka na lang. Bawat interview sa media, 'kala ko aatras ka?' Trolling 'yun e. Si Mayor Isko napuno. Pero ako kasi, ito character ko e, mahaba pagtitiis ko."

Moreno dared Robredo to "be a hero" and withdraw from the race during an Easter Sunday joint press conference with rivals Ping Lacson and Norberto Gonzales. Moreno reiterated the call on Tuesday.

Both Lacson and Gonzales denied they support the call.

For Ong, the rival candidates should talk behind closed doors to avoid further damage to their campaigns.

"Usap kayo para mas maliwanagan, hindi supporters ang nagpapalitan ng salita," he said.
