DOH Declares Code Red Amid Fears of COVID-19 Spread

The Department of Health (DOH) has finally declared Code Red alert in the entire country amid fears that COVID-19 has been spreading in communities undetected. A Code Red alert means all hospital personnel in the country must report for duty at their respective facilities to provide medical services.

The announcement came as the DOH confirmed the 6th case of COVID-19 in the country, confirming that there is already local transmission of the disease in the Philippines.

"The DOH confirms that the previously reported 5th case of COVID-19 as the first case of local transmission in the country after verification with BI, showed that patient had no recent travel history," said Health Secretary Francisco Duque in a press briefing.

Duque was referring to a 62-year-old man now suffering from severe pneumonia, and confined at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

The patient’s wife also tested positive for COVID-19, and is now the sixth confirmed case of COVID-19 in the country.

In a press briefing on March 6, Duque revealed the man had mingled with people at a Muslim prayer house in Greenhills, which has since been closed as precautionary measure.

Earlier today, international consultancy firm Deloitte confirmed one of its employees has tested postive for COVID-19. It is not known whether this is the same case or a separate one.

"We can confirm that a colleague in our Deloitte Philippines office has tested positive for COVID-19. The colleague is currently in hospital receiving treatment and further tests, and Deloitte is supporting the colleague and family in every way we can," the statement said.
