Duterte Accepts ABS-CBN Apology, Vows Not to Interfere in Franchise Renewal

"I accept the apology, of course."

President Rodrigo Duterte has accepted the national apology of ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak, and promised not to interfere in Congress’ deliberation on the network’s franchise renewal.

The president also added that ABS-CBN should just donate the P2.6 million the network allegedly owes his campaign.

“Yes, it’s already there. I accept the apology, of course,” said Duterte as he spoke to reporters in Malacañang.

“I leave it to Congress…The critical move is in the House and I tell you I am not going to interfere. I am out of it,” said the President.

On Monday, Katigbak issued a public apology to Duterte during a senate hearing on the network’s franchise renewal.

"We were sorry if we offended the President. That was not the intention of the network. We felt that we were just abiding by the laws and regulations that surround the airing of political ads," Katigbak said.

Katigbak clarified that ABS-CBN was simply implementing a first come first served rule on political ads and that it erred in not immediately refunding Duterte’s camp when it failed to air his ads.
