Sorry, Eating Is Prohibited Inside Cinemas

Face masks on, enjoy the show.

Eating is prohibited inside movie theaters that were allowed to reopen in Metro Manila last October 16 after being shuttered for 19 months by the COVID-19 pandemic, one cinema operator said.

Movie houses are allowed to operate at 30 percent capacity in the capital region under Alert Level 3 for fully vaccinated individuals.

"The experience initially is going to be a little bit unusual, face masks have to be worn... unfortunately you won't be able to eat which is a big part of the moviegoing experience. No popcorn," Megaworld Lifestyle Malls head Graham Coates told ANC.

Cinema operators also reduced the number of seats to ensure physical distancing. Special air filtration and aircon units were installed to comply with government requirements, Coates said. The cinema will be disinfected after every screening.

Ticket purchases will be cashless, and guests can purchase tickets online, he said.

Coates appealed to moviegoers to bear with cinema operators and follow restrictions to ensure safety in movie houses.

The Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines said the reopening will help more than 300,000 theater workers. It also called for patience as operators prepare for the reopening of cinemas.
