'Superman' Mayor Lifts Sacks of Rice and Delivers Them to 34,000 Households

Netizens heaped praises on Mayor Emerson “Emeng” Pascual of Gapan City, Nueva Ecija for his outstanding service to his constituents as Luzon enters the second week of the enhanced community quarantine.

Pascual was likened to Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, whose stellar performance in handling the health crisis has made them viral on social media.

Instead of providing rice per kilo, Pascual distributed one sack of rice per family to his constituents. Each sack is 50 kilograms. On March 22, Pascual was shown personally carrying and delivering sacks of rice to his people.

On top of this, the mayor also provisioned 3,000 eggs to be distributed daily to the residents of Gapan.

Mayor Pascual Gives Up Personal Savings for Constituents

Aside from distributing eggs and rice, Pascual also allegedly donated all his savings from his salary, which he had been saving since he took office.

In a viral post, a netizen detailed the sacrifices made by mayor Pascual and his family.

“He donated P4.5 million, which are savings from his salary that he had been setting aside ever since he became mayor of Gapan, because the city is short of funds by P16 million.”

“He also said that he will add P1.5 million to the P4.5 million so that the total will be P6 million.”

“The remaining P10 million can be sourced from (barangay chair) Boy Pascual and from (provincial board member) Joy Pascual,” said the post.

The post further adds, “He even closed the city to protect the residents of Gapan. If I’m not mistaken, he was the one who initiated the lockdown, which was followed by surrounding towns in Nueva Ecija, because he knows Gapan is the first town you will enter going to Nueva Ecija.”

Pascual Asks Residents Not to Sell Their Harvests

Nueva Ecija’s moniker as the Rice Granary of the Philippines is a nod to its abundant harvest of rice and being the biggest source of rice grains in the country. It was for this reason that Mayor Pascual was able to distribute sacks of rice to every family in his city.

But the mayor also requested they don’t sell their harvests.

“He requested Gapan residents to not sell their harvests to outsiders because Gapan is in need of them. The city will be the one to buy their harvest.”

Gapan has an estimated population of 110,000, with 34,000 households, according to Mayor Pascual.
