In an monumental event for Philippine sports, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz made history on July 26 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when she won the country's first-ever gold medal.

The 30-year-old from Zamboanga set a new world record, lifting 224 kilograms in the women’s 55-kg weight division, beating her opponent China’s Qiuyun Liao, who was formerly the world-record holder. Now that title, as well as many others, belong to Diaz.

Diaz is not only the first-ever Filipino gold medalist, she is also the second Filipino in history to win two Olympics medals. Her first medal was a silver in the women’s 53-kg weight division in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, which was also a big moment for Philippine sports as it was the Philippines’ first Olympic medal in 20 years.

It was an emotional moment for everyone, sports-lovers and spectators alike, but most especially for Hidilyn, whose name will now be written in history books.

Here are the best social media reactions to the infectious joy of her milestone victory. We're sure plenty of us were just as misty-eyed as the Filipino Olympian when she was handed the Philippines' first gold.
