Typhoon Ulysses Victims Need Food-And Chefs. Here's How to Help the Marikina Soup Kitchen

Here's how to help the food drives.

Typhoon Ulysses brought destructive winds and torrential rain when it made its landfall in the Philippines on November 12, leaving in its trail numerous cities in waist-high floods, power outages, and immense distraught nationwide. One of the most affected areas by typhoon Ulysses is Marikina City, where the typhoon caused deep, muddy floods that residents were forced to stay on top of their roofs as they wait for rescue teams to bring them to safer grounds.

As numerous photos and footage of the onslaught of Ulysses in Marikina City were posted on social media, people started looking for ways to help out. Chefs started to organize soup kitchens and relief operations as early as November 12 to provide meals and other necessities for the residents of Marikina. Chef Myke Tatung Sarthou was able to mobilize operations, prepare hot meals, and distribute it to Marikina locals with the help of other volunteers.

As of writing, Chef Tatung is still looking for food donations and volunteers to help him out in the kitchen. For those who are interested to help out, you may send him a message on Facebook or send the food donations at Pandan Asian Cafe, 76 Scout Limbaga, Quezon City.

Chef Jam Melchor of Slow Food Youth Network, who joined efforts with Red Cross Philippines, is also accepting food donations and volunteers to help feed the affected families in different evacuation centers in Metro Manila and Rizal. He says that according to Red Cross, they have a record of 2,796 families (or 11,330 individuals) who they need to provide meals for.

Chef Melchor is looking for volunteers and chefs who are willing to help prepare the meals. For those who are interested, you can send him a message on Facebook. While for those who want to donate food, you can drop them off directly at Red Cross Philippines - National Headquarters, 37 corner Boni EDSA, Mandaluyong City. You can coordinate directly with Pred Morales by contacting him through this number: (0917) 847-8455.

Chef Waya Araos-Wijangco of Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe on Maginhawa Street, Quezon City will also start receiving food donations, beddings, and hygiene kits beginning November 13.
