Former senator Juan Ponce Enrile lambasted TV host-comedian Vice Ganda, calling him "bastos” during the Dito sa Bayan ni Juan program of SMNI News Channel, which covered the latest developments in the 12-day suspension imposed by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) on the Kapamilya noontime show It's Showtime.

Enrile called what Vice and his partner Ion Perez did as "salacious" in the "Isip Bata" segment of It's Showtime on July 25, 2023.

According to the 99-year-old politician, who was appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the chief presidential legal counsel, their actions were not acceptable for a noontime program that also included children when the "cake icing incident” occurred.

The said incident was one of the bases of the MTRCB in their unanimous decision to impose the suspension of It's Showtime.

In the course of their conversation, Enrile said that he had watched Vice and wasn’t amused by his style of humor.

The veteran politician criticized the comedian, "Hindi lang walang decency kundi abusado. Alam ko na mapagpatawa yang binabanggit mo na babae [Vice] magmula pa ng araw, ganyan na yan…"

Enrile concluded, "You're earning your living and popularity from rudeness."

For almost six decades, Enrile has held various powers in the government — from the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. until the administration of his son Marcos Jr.

Among Enrile's government positions were Commissioner of Bureau of Customs (1966-1968), Acting Secretary of Finance (1966-1968), Secretary of Justice (1969-1970), Minister of National Defense (1970-1986), Assemblyman (1978-1986), Cagayan Representative (1992-1995), Senator (1987-1992, 1995-2001, 2004-2016), and currently Chief Presidential Legal Counsel.

When Marcos Sr. declared Martial Law, Enrile was in office as National Defense minister.

Vice has yet to react to Enrile's statement.

Meanwhile, the ABS-CBN camp said they will appeal to the MTRCB regarding the 12-day suspension imposed on It's Showtime.

MTRCB Chairperson Lala Sotto emphatically denied that they are targeting It's Showtime.
