Cheaper Air Fares and Hotels to Encourage Local Travelers Amid Travel Fears
Fears amid the novel coronavirus outbreak are affecting other sectors of society apart from health. In fact, tourism growth has dropped so low that Tourism secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat told ABS-CBN she's expecting "some P14.8 billion foregone revenue this February because the start of the travel ban."
In a move to bolster tourism, especially domestically, Puyat announced prices of accommodations and airline tickets will be decreased an effort to lower travel rates. In a social media post, she described it as "true Bayanihan sprit at work to sustain tourism growth in these challenging times."
This course of action was decided upon after President Rodrigo Duterte met with Lance Gokongwei (Cebu Pacific president and CEO), Ricardo Isla (Air Asia CEO), Michael Odylon Romero (Air Asia owner), Gilbert Santamaria (Philippine Airlines president), Jose Clemente) president of the Tourism Congress of the Philippines), and Arthur Lopez (president of Philippine Hotel Owners Association). It was announced via a press conference yesterday, February 10.
The President himself will be encouraging local tourism by going around the Philippines every weekend and documenting his travels.
