Representative Rodante Marcoleta of Sagip Party-list was criticized this month after his political ad was shown in Kapamilya Online Live, a YouTube channel that has become the online version of ABS-CBN. Marcoleta was among the most vocal lawmakers who opposed the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN in 2020.

Throughout the franchise renewal hearings of ABS-CBN, he questioned various issues surrounding the company, including the citizenship of Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, the network’s Filipino ownership, ABS-CBN’s 50-year operation that is allegedly against the constitution, and the legality of the reacquisition of ABS-CBN by the Lopez family in 1986 after it was forcibly taken from them by former President Ferdinand Marcos’ cronies during Martial Law. All of these were countered by ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak.

Marcoleta is running for senator in the 2022 elections.

Akala ko ba may nilabag na batas ang Kapamilya network kaya ipinasara nina Marcoleta. Ba't may pa-ad siya?” said Jerry Gracio, who is running as a party-list representative.

(“I thought the Kapamilya network violated laws that’s why Marcoleta and his allies had it shut down. Why does he have ads on the network?”)

Marcoleta Defends His Political Ads on ABS-CBN

According to Marcoleta, it was ABS-CBN’s choice to run his ads.

“The acceptance of the pol ad has nothing to do with its closure. First of all, it can reject our pol ad outright. It was its choice to make to begin with,” Marcoleta said in an interview with the Inquirer

According to Marcoleta, he has no control over where his ads appear.

“I neither control nor supervise the works of our ad agency because they know their job well. I don’t decide on which networks to approach for the propagation of our political advocacies,” Marcoleta added.

Earlier in November 2021, Marcoleta made headlines after he suggested the Commission on Audit to inspect Meralco’s books and called for a review of the company’s legislative franchise, even if Meralco’s franchise allows it to operate for the next seven years.
