Isko Moreno For President? Mayor Says He'd Rather Focus on Manila
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said he would rather focus on leading the Philippines capital city and fighting the COVID-19 pandemic than think about his political plans in the 2022 elections.
Moreno was asked on CNN Philippines' Newsroom Weekend about a recent Pulse Asia survey, where he placed fourth among possible presidential contenders and topped the choices for vice president.
The former movie actor is on his first term as Manila Mayor, where he gained national attention for scrubbing the grime off the city's landmarks and endearing himself to the masses with street slang that he knows by heart, having grown up in Tondo.
“More than political growth or career growth no… Hindi ko talaga siya ine-entertain. I would rather focus on Manila, and focus on the pandemic," he said.
“Thank you very much sa inyo dahil sinasama niyo ako... But let us just go back to reality. Reality is there’s a pandemic," he said.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio was the choice of 26% of 2,400 respondents in the Nov. 23 to Dec. 2 poll, Pulse Asia said. President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter has not discussed her plans for 2022 and has kept a relatively low profile while helping out in recent typhoon relief efforts.
Tied at second place were Sen. Grace Poe, who lost to President Duterte in 2016 and former Sen. Bongbong Marcos, who lost in the 2016 elections to Vice President Leni Robredo. Both scored 14%, according to Pulse Asia.
