GMA-7’s flagship news program, 24 Oras, went viral on social media after airing its report on the successful landing of NASA's Perseverance rover on planet Mars.
The historical event in space took place on Friday, February 19, 2021.
The 24 Oras report on February 22 featured the three Filipino-American engineers who are among the thousands of scientists and technicians involved in the mission.
Unwittingly, 24 Oras’ report also became the talk of the town.
While delivering the report at the studio, the augmented reality (AR) graphics made news anchor Mel Tiangco appear like she was in Mars.

Of course, playful netizens took notice of this and posted hilarious comments on social media.
On February 23, Twitter user @russelldaviiid reposted a photo of Mel’s report with the Mars AR and came up with this funny caption: “congrats po tita mel as kauna-unahang pinay sa mars [smiling face with heart-shaped eyes emoji] #proudpinoy”
