Philippine Eagles Need Your Help to Survive the Pandemic
As the lockdown stretches on for three months, zookeepers and conservationists are digging deep into their dwindling savings to keep animals in their care alive. The Philippine eagle is one of the animals that need your help now.
There are only 400 pairs of Philippine eagles left in the world, and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) is the only organization working to keep it from becoming extinct. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the eagle as critically endangered—which is a step away from becoming extinct in the wild.

That threat of extinction for Philippine eagles has become even more pronounced as COVID-19 paralyzed the world, affecting the income of zoos and conservation centers around the world, which rely on visitors’ admission fees for their upkeep.
The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC), which is run by the PEF, is the only breeding and rehabilitation facility for the national bird of the Philippines. It is home to 31 Philippine eagles and 81 endangered raptors, mammals, and reptiles. On March 18, PEC had to close its doors to the public because of the COVID-19 crisis and avian flu.
As a private non-profit, the PEC relies primarily on admission fees and donations for its upkeep, but that has been affected by the pandemic.
“With this temporary closure, we’re losing our largest source of funds, putting the animals in our care at risk,” the PEF said.
The Philippine Eagle Foundation has reached out to the public for donations so they can buy the proper food for the critically endangered animals in its facility.
