Ramon Ang Tagged as Potential Candidate Alongside Villar, Pacquiao, Marcos

President Rodrigo Duterte has made it clear he has no plans to run for a second term in office, and has yet to announce support for his would-be successor. The 2022 presidential elections are less than two years away, and 2021 will likely be the year the presidentiables announce their intentions and prepare for campaign season.

There are plenty of rumors going around as to who may or may not run. There are the obvious candidates like Duterte’s daughter, Davao City mayor Sara Duterte, and the crowd favorites like senator Manny Pacquiao.

BizNews Asia, which is headed by veteran business journalist Tony Lopez, has tagged nine presidentiables as the most likely to run in 2022:

1| Ramon Ang, president and COO of San Miguel Corp.
2| Mayor Sara Duterte of Davao City
3| Senator Bong Go
4| Senator Panfilo Lacson, former presidential candidate (2004)
5| Bongbong Marcos, former senator and former vice presidential candidate (2016)
6| Senator Manny Pacquiao
7| Senator Grace Poe, former presidential candidate (2016)
8| Vice President Leni Robredo
9| Senator Cynthia Villar

Of the nine presidentiables listed by BizNews Asia, one businessman stands out: Ramon Ang. RSA and San Miguel Corp. have made headlines countless times in 2020 for their relief efforts during this pandemic year, and the Forbes lister has been asked more than once whether he will enter politics, to which he has always answered (non-verbatim): No thanks.

“I prefer serving the public in the best way I can, which is to channel my resources and help the poor. It is not in my best interest to run for office,” Ang explained in a Zoom conference. “Why expose myself and my loved ones?”

There are still 17 months left until the elections, and 2021, known already as the “vaccine year,” will set the stage for the 2022 presidentiables.

Their actions, or lack of, in regards to vaccine efforts will be a defining factor for these potential candidates, and Filipinos ought to examine which one will be the best leader for a post-pandemic world.
