Russian President Vladimir Putin is the latest world leader to congratulate the presumptive Philippine president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on his election win.

In a press statement, the Kremlin announced Putin’s words for Marcos:

"I expect that your activity as head of state will help further promote the constructive cooperation between Russia and the Philippines in various spheres. This meets in full the interests of our nations and is in line with the endeavors to strengthen security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.”

The Philippines and Russia enjoyed closer ties during incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, however, relations have cooled since Russia began its war on Ukraine.

In March, Marcos released a statement on the issue, calling for a peaceful resolution to the armed conflict and for Russia to “respect Ukraine’s freedom.”

Other world leaders have come forward to congratulate Marcos. U.S. President Joe Biden called Marcos personally and shared his hope to "continue strengthening the U.S.-Philippine Alliance, while expanding bilateral cooperation on a wide range of issues, including the fight against COVID-19, addressing the climate crisis, promoting broad-based economic growth, and respect for human rights."

To Marcos, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morison said, "Following the 75th anniversary of Australia-Philippines relations last year, we look forward to continuing to advance our long-standing friendship."
