Is the SEA Games turning out to be the Philippines’ version of the Fyre Festival? Not exactly, but some people think so, especially with news of an overpriced cauldron, top athletes being kicked off the national team, and a slew of last-minute fixes. The 2019 SEA Games has a budget of at least P6 billion, much of which was allocated for infrastructure. But with mere days before the opening of the SEA Games on November 30, the government is still scrambling to finish two venues for the events.

A Warm Welcome

According to House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, who chairs the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC), preparations in Tagaytay in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex are still incomplete.

"Usually countries have 4 years [to prepare]. We had a little bit below two years, so Subic and then Tagaytay and then Rizal we’re still rushing things," said Cayetano to reporters in Tarlac.

The Clark venues were expected to be finished by September, but Cayetano said delays in the passage of the budget affected the SEA Games venues’ completion.

Despite the incomplete venues, Cayetano dispelled fears that the SEA Games 2019 will be like the infamous Fyre Festival. “I can tell you, we are very much prepared,” said Cayetano.
