Only One Philippine School Makes It to the Top 500 Universities in the World List

 The premiere state university breaks into the top 500 for the first time.

London-based Times Higher Education has listed the University of the Philippines as 4th in the ASEAN region of top research universities.  In the world, it is in the 410-500 group, putting the Philippines on the global map of high-quality education.

UP Improved Rank Every Year

The University of the Philippines first made the list in 2017 when it ranked in the top 1,000 research universities. In 2018, it was listed in the top 800. Times Higher Education ranks the world’s most research-intensive universities based on 13 criteria in five general areas: teaching (30 percent), research (30 percent), citations (30 percent), international outlook (7.5 percent) and industry income (2.5 percent).

According to UP’s website, UP was ranked in the top 600 for 2019, and 159th in citations for the year 2020. Citations significantly contribute to a university’s prestige in terms of its influence in spreading new knowledge and ideas. UP has improved its scores four out the five general areas used in the assessment. It scored 24.1 (previously 21.7) in teaching, 17.2 (previously 16.4) in research, 86.9 (preciously 69.1) in citations, and 39.4 (previously 35.8) in industry income.

The state university slightly dipped in its score in international outlook, which was previously at 39.5, and is now at 37.9. It is measured in terms of the number of international students and staff at the university, and the number of international collaborations with the university. For objectivity, the assessment used a global academic reputation survey in determining points for research and teaching.
