Upsilon Sigma Phi and Unilever Philippines Champion Sustainability in Climate Action Network U-Talk

The Upsilon Sigma Phi’s Climate Action Network (CAN) held its second U-Talk webinar highlighting Unilever’s Climate Transition Action Plan last August 14. In addition, the webinar discussed how private sectors are stepping up in reducing global greenhouse emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

Unilever Philippines’ VP for Sustainable Business and Communications Ed Sunico, Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Director Tecson John Lim, Pasig Congressman Roman Romulo, and MORE Power CEO Roel Castro, were present in this edition of U-Talk.

In his talk, Sunico highlighted Unilever’s support in protecting the planet. He discussed how global threats such as climate change and social inequality are deeply intertwined. Climate change impacts the environment and leads to economic instability as it affects the lives and livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. Hence, Unilever has set ambitious goals to combat these threats through its Climate Transition Action Plan. 

Climate Transition Action Plan 

The Climate Transition Action Plan sets out a range of targets and actions designed to deliver an emissions reduction roadmap covering Unilever’s operations, value chain, brands and products, and even how it influences the wider society.

Unilever Philippines has put this plan into action starting with its transition to 100% renewable grid electricity in all its sites thru its partnership with First Gen. Unilever is also leading various climate-action initiatives including plant-based food transformation, transition to the non-HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) point of sale ice cream freezers and driving a massive plastic collection program thru its “Kolek-Kilo-Kita” program in hundreds of barangays in the country. 

In parallel to these efforts, through the DOE, the government has initiatives that will support the companies with their climate transition journey, such as its plan to help E-mobility in the future. 

“The DOE is advocating for the acceleration of the use of E-vehicles for Filipinos by providing dedicated lanes as a non-fiscal incentive. Once cleared by the other agencies, such as MMDA and DPWH, these green routes will help companies utilizing electric vehicles become more efficient in their logistics,” DOE Usec. Wimpy Fuentebella said.

In an earlier webinar, he mentioned that the Philippine government would create policies, laws, and initiatives to boost climate resilience.

As part of the Upsilon-CAN’s initiative to focus discussions on the worsening global climate situation, the organization encourages an interchange of ideas and solutions among Filipinos to address the global problem brought about by climate change.
