Seeking Reelection, Vico Sotto Wants Partners Who Shun Money and Power
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto is seeking reelection with a "work first" promise, and with a call for reliable partners in his crusade against transactional politics that has earned him international recognition.
Sotto, who is running with former Pasig Rep. Dodot Jaworski, was accompanied by his celebrity parents—Coney Reyes and Vic Sotto—when he filed his certificate of candidacy on Friday.
"Ang aasahan n'yo naman po sa akin, ang mga taong nakakakilala sa akin, alam po na uunahin ko palagi ang trabaho," Sotto told reporters.
On social media, Sotto reiterated the same promise: "Basta, panahon man ng pulitika o hindi, uunahin natin ang trabaho."
A single-term councilor at the time, Sotto in 2019 made headlines when he toppled the decades-old Eusebio dynasty in Pasig and introduced a new brand of politics that resonated with millennials and Gen Zs.
"Ang hiling ko lang sa inyo, bigyan niyo ako ng mga kasanggang MAPAGKAKATIWALAAN natin. Yung hindi puwesto o pera ang habol, kundi yung magiging katuwang ko para paigtingin pa ang mga reporma't serbisyo ng pamahalaan," Sotto said in a tweet.
Sotto's "David and Goliath" tale made him appealing to the public, political analyst Ramon Casiple told reportr in a previous interview.
"People clearly see what he stands for and that's exactly why he has support," said Casiple, executive director of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform.
Should he win his reelection bid, Sotto said he would make sure that reforms he introduced during his first term would be felt by all of his constituents--noting that he only served as local chief for nine months before the pandemic disrupted his governance.
"Nandiyan na 'yung mga reporma. Iba na ngayon. Paiigtingin na lang natin at sisiguraduhin na damang dama ng bawat Pasigueño ang mas pinabubuting serbisyo ng pamahalaang lungsod," he said.
