Watch an Exclusive Clip From Zelensky's 60 Minutes Interview In Ukraine
As the Ukrainian resistance moves beyond defending the capital in Kiev to retake large swathes of central and northern Ukraine, one question remains from the war's dawn: who is President Volodymyr Zelensky, and how has he led his people to such an unlikely juncture? 60 Minutes set out to find an answer, securing an interview inside a government building in Kyiv with the former comedian and television star who stood against Vladimir Putin and has, for now, held his own. For a piece set to air on CBS this Sunday, correspondent Scott Pelley ventured to Ukraine to find a landscape ravaged by war, a people decimated by Russia's ruthless tactics, and a president who oversaw a successful defense of the country's core until the Russians retreated, for now at least, to the eastern territories of the Donbas.
It has come at a cost, not least because international observers have assessed that more than one of the Russian's atrocities constitute war crimes. Taken together, the reports emerging from cities like Bucha—a place Pelley visits during his trip—constitute a great horror, perhaps the worst incidents of brutality in conflict on the European continent since the Serbian military crimes of the 1990s. It is certainly the largest land war in Europe since 1945. Check out an exclusive clip from Pelley's report on the ground in Ukraine below.
The full story will air on 60 Minutes this Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern on CBS.
