Women—they are hard to shop for on any occasion, Christmas included, so its best to stick to what is certain, which is that most of them appreciate jewelry or something shiny, or shimmery, or glittery, or any other permutation of light-catching.

The Audemars Royal Oak Frosted Gold certainly fits the bill. It is a timepiece that resembles jewelry (or jewelry that doubles as a watch). The latest edition, which has been created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the very first Royal Oak for ladies, is coated in what can only be described as a multitude of fairy lights that remind you of her eyes.

That frost is a feat of design that follows in the tradition of the original Royal Oak. In the midst of the quartz crisis, and with a demand for a steel watch from the Italian market, designer Gerald Genta dreamed up the Oak, whose disruptive design—a steel watch with an octagonal bezel and visible screws—has made it one of the must-have watches for men today.

But because you can’t have all the fun, the Oak eventually made its way to the wrists of women. In collaboration with jewelry designer Carolina Bucci, this year’s Frosted Gold model trades the brushed surface of the traditional design for a season-appropriate coat of shimmer. The Florentine technique, an ancient gold hammering method wherein the metal is beaten with a diamond-tipped tool to create micro indentations, give the Oak’s case and bracelet that dusted brilliance.

“The Royal Oak is one of the most iconic watch designs in existence. That is quite daunting when you are considering how to refresh something aesthetically. I wanted to give the watch a dynamic quality that captures the attention of those who see it,” says Bucci. “By treating the finish of the gold with a Florentine effect, you have added nothing to the watch, nor subtracted anything. [You] just altered the surface of the gold to make it sparkle when catching the light. In doing so, the watch becomes something entirely fresh and confident.”
