Few shoes qualify as icons not just of sneaker culture but culture in general. Back to the Future: Part II's Nike Mags surely deserve the distinction. They're not just iconic in appearance, either; their hefty resell price tags highlight their significance to collectors and fans alike. Of course, this is not just a shoe. (And yes, a single shoe. The left shoe, to be exact.) This is a prop from an iconic movie, and symbolic beyond any measure of mere footwear. When it debuted, Back to the Future: Part II—and these shoes in particular, with their lights and power laces—were a promise of the future. The Mag was more than just a sneaker, it was a glimpse of where technology might take us in both aesthetic and function. That fan demand was so high that the concept kicks were eventually produced IRL is a testament to their power.

Of course, even though they're a symbol in their own way, the shoes—specifically the foam used in the sole—are also real-life objects. And sadly, they're crumbling, because foam has an expiration date, and these are well past it. All that's really left to wonder, then, is how does one properly preserve such a shoe? Because we'd like to see it stick around for as long as possible.
