Why You Need A Pair Of Pleated Trousers

Return to the fold.

Pleated trousers do exactly what they say on the tin. As a slight variation of the classic regular fit, this style of trouser involves folds to the waist that allow for more room at the seat, and with it, extra comfort. What's more, they nip in at the waist, giving a flattering edge to a body that is no doubt painstakingly honed.

Granted, all of that doesn't sound terribly different to your regular go-tos. Nor does it sound terribly exciting. But pleated trousers, once a favourite of post-war gents, are now back en vogue, but only if they remain pleated, of course.

When ironing your brand new pair, ensure you fold the pleats before applying heat. This way, you'll ensure your trousers remain as crisp as when you first bought them, and the all-important flattering pleats remain intact.

Before all of that, though, you actually need some. Which is why we've listed the best below to bring you back into the fold.

The French have an unrivalled ability to a) act like they couldn't care less and b) dress immaculately, and still look like they couldn't care less. So you can thank Parisian label Maison Kitsuné for that same level of effortlessness with some wider pleated trousers. Pair with your finest plain white T-shirt and a nonchalantly raised brow. Maison Kitsuné, Linen Cropped Trousers, matchesfashion.com

Despite sounding like a country estate in the home counties, Hartford was actually founded in Paris in 1979 as a way to cement the relationship between European style and American aesthetics. Four decades later and the mantra holds strong, resulting in some pleated trousers more solid than NATO itself. Hartford, Teddy Pleated Cotton Trousers, mrporter.com

Swedish cool, though a relatively recent phenomenon, is only set to swell if native brand CMMN keep it up. The Scandi iteration of the pleated trouser is equal parts cool and classic, and is best paired with a white T-shirt and an extortionate pint in Stockholm. Pleated trousers are a menswear classic. As are plenty of things that started in the military. So, it makes perfect sense for De Bonne Facture to fuse the two, with its take on the trouser in question finished in a field-ready khaki. De Bonne Facture, Pleated Drill Chinos, mrporter.com
