All the Best Style Moves of 2018
Ask well-dressed men to define style, and we’re sure you won’t get a single answer. Some may tell you that it’s supposed to be timeless; others will argue it’s a product of its time.
Ask us, however, and we’ll answer with this: Real style defies the challenges of time. While we will always favor the classics, we tip our hat to those who manage to pull off this season’s trends and still own the look decades from now.
This year, thanks to the popularity of pop culture and social media, we've seen more men push the envelope when it comes to their sartorial choices. More rules are being broken, more risks being taken. Behold, the highlights of men’s style in 2018.
1| Gender-bending style has been big
Perhaps the biggest style signifier that we’re in 2018 (and not in, you know, 1964) is that we’ve been paying more attention to androgynous and gender-bending style stars than ever. Fantastic Beasts actor Ezra Miller is arguably this year’s most omnipresent cover star, rocking suit jackets and patent pumps simultaneously. Then you have Harry Styles, a perpetual risk-taker channeling a modern-day Bowie or Mick Jagger in flamboyant prints and fabric. And of course, who could forget Rami Malek in his iconic turn as Freddie Mercury in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody?
2| The ’90s aesthetic is still very much a thing
Crossing over to local Instagram-land and you’ll notice that the ’90s thrift-store style isn’t going away soon. Just take a look at homegrown style stars James Reid, David Guison, and LA Aguinaldo. From the center-parted curtain bangs to jackets and sweaters that look like they’ve been fished out of an ukay, the vintage cool-kid look will probably be the most prominent style aesthetic of the 2010s.
3| Men stepped up their style game at the ABS-CBN Ball
We’ve got to be honest: Gents in evening wear still need work. But, there have been more hits than misses at ABS-CBN’s biggest ball yet, which saw a much wider attendance of its stars, inviting all sorts of looks on the red carpet. From timeless dinner jackets to harnesses and backpacks, it’s like we’ve truly seen it all. We’re glad celebs are taking their fashion more seriously. Any style upgrade is always more than welcome.
4| This IGTV channel is your newest street style inspiration
Forget glossy influencers and unattainable celebrities. If anything, 2018 has shown that you can take style inspiration from anyone, even from a group of wacky friends posting their antics on Instagram. Goofy trio Pereastreet (@pereastreet), composed of Julo de Guzman, Judd Figuerres, and Edsel Uy have become the Internet's unlikely overnight stars. As the three of them work in production house WYD Productions, the raw, spontaneous feel of their videos is deliberate yet effortless at the same time. Watch them butcher “The Circle of Life” from The Lion King while unboxing some much-coveted kicks.
5| You need to start doing the French Tuck
Gentlemen, listen closely: the French Tuck is perhaps this year’s most definitive style tip. Popularized by Queer Eye’s resident fashion expert Tan France, the French tuck is a simple sartorial move that involves loosely tucking the front of your shirt and leaving the back billowy. The Queer Eye guru swears by this technique, as it slims down your shape and adds interest to your rig.
6| Hip-hop is the future of men’s fashion
The days when hip-hop stars were associated with elephant pants and oversized T-shirts are over. Now, designer labels left and right are fighting to dress these rappers. While Kanye West, for all his oddities, has been one of the most prominent figures of hip-hop couture, this generation counts A$AP Rocky, Travis Scott, and Post Malone as the future of streetwear. Sure, their outfits are a little outlandish for the average Joe, but they’re mostly rapping about the ballin’ bougie life anyway.
Meanwhile, Childish Gambino or Donald Glover is in a style league of his own. There’s an undone elegance to his rig. Think silk shirts and tan suits, all while carrying that laid-back, ’70s motown vibe.
