Bold Shirts Aren't Just For Summer

Burn the rulebook: color and vibrancy are year-round pursuits.

Hawaiian shirts work in summer. We're all well aware. But as style progresses, and the old rules waver, cool shirts for men needn't be limited to the heatwave. Color does exist beyond August.

There are different types of said color, too. While block fluoros may seem unpalatable to classic dressers, know that you have a wide, handsome-looking tasting menu to gorge upon: the patchworks of JW Anderson, the silky goodness of Sies Marjan, the bright stripes of Ralph Lauren, the baroque prints of Versace and so on and so forth. There's a lot to choose from. A lot.

Of course, it's hard to shake the ancient diktats, and even harder to refine your perfect year-round punched-up palette. So we've done the hard work, and ticked off every cool shirt for men below.

Color alone is good, but color with texture is even better. Enlist Comme des Garçons, then, for a combination of both: a bold tricolor of orange, blue and pink, and one with a liberal use of corduroy.

Eve's slip-up in Eden made for one biblical tragedy. But at least it made for one very lovely shirt, with Endless Joy's depiction of Paradise's implosion colorfully placed onto a short-sleeved shell. Well in, Eve.

Creating volume isn't all high shine and acid shades. Beat yourself black and blue instead, with Dickies subtly punctuating the top half without diving into a Dulux paint tin.

4| Brain Dead

California isn't all chill vibes and seashell necklaces. On the contrary, creative collective Brain Dead taps into the more manic SoCal scene, the Fear & Loathing kind, the sort that pours LSD trips into loud, proud vacation shirts. Surf's up. Really up, actually.

5| Arket

Multiple shades are fun, yes, but one block tone is more versatile. Arket's green shirt is just as comfortable riding solo as it is with other layers, proving a pop of color isn't all that difficult to re-work.

Grey is no longer boring. And for that, thank Folk's deft hand in uplifting the safest of shades in an easy-to-wear print. Complete with a vest below, and your favorite pair of pleated black trousers.

You want a shirt that works on the weekend. You also want one that sits with a suit (and isn't boring nine-to-five garb). You just want a shirt that says 'you've seen this piece before, and yes, you're still impressed'. Which is exactly what Reiss' darkened stripe does with aplomb.

Barena, in its all Venetian wisdom, placed classic checks on a strong course of eye drops. The result? A brighter, clearer vision in which colors actually pop on an Italian-made shirt.

Blue is, arguably, man's best friend. Not your dog. Not your significant other. But blue, classic sky blue, preferably, and one put to good use in YMC's classic Cuban collared shirt.

French-Moroccan outfit Casablanca is big on the statement. And, with a wealth of inspiration that forms a bridge between streetwear and high fashion, it makes for a firm exclamation point year-round—much like this printed silk shirt.
