How David Beckham Makes 'Easygoing' Look 'Outstanding'

I dress like this all the time. The difference is people offer to give me spare change.

I'm convinced, and have been for some time, that David Beckham can make anything look good. He alone, despite our resistance here on the Esquire style desk, is keeping the newsboy cap alive and out-shined the groom at last summer's Royal Wedding. Hell, even his worst looks somehow don't come across nearly as offensive as they would if, say, yours truly wore them.

I was reminded of this on Wednesday when a photo came across the wires of Becks stepping out with his wife, Victoria, in New York City, while wearing an outfit I've put on for a hungover bodega run almost every Saturday since 2014. The difference (other than the beautiful face, body, and ability to make neck tattoos look cool) is that when I assemble the T-shirt, hoodie, overcoat, jeans and boots together, the Captain Planet of easygoing style doesn't quite emerge. Rather, I mostly get side-eyed from passersby. "Do you think we should have given him change," they mutter to their significant other while I stumble toward a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich.

But I digress. Even the most hungover of men can make this work, neck tats or not. What Becks is showing us here is that, when done thoughtfully, keeping it simple always wins. The plain white T-shirt, the gray zip hoodie, the light-wash jeans, and the Doc Martins are all easily accessible to all of us civilians. His statement piece, the overcoat, is as well, but by the looks of it, I have to assume it's not something available at Urban Outfitters (where you can likely find the rest of his fit).

And so the biggest lesson in all of this perhaps, is the power of a great statement piece of outerwear. The best of them work in both Beckham's and my own scenario—great for a night out in the city and the cure to what ails you from it the next morning. And when it's really good, it can help even the basics look outstanding.

10 Style Moves You Should Steal From David Beckham

1| Beckham is all about clothes that fit him well. The perfectly tailored jeans and not-too-big tee make this outfit feel purposeful, not lazy.

2| A camel-colored suit is not quite as conventional as gray and navy, but it wears just as easily. Take a cue from Beckham and keep the rest of the outfit classic.

3| If you want to get into the hat game, it's worth your time to figure out your face shape. Beckham's square jawline lends itself easily to a wide-brimmed hat.

4| If you're trying to avoid a dress shirt under a blazer, a crewneck sweater in the same color as your suit is an easy option.

5| Beckham knows classics aren't boring. Adding your own personal touches—like a ring, a pocket square, a stellar head of hair—make the look your own.

6| Really, all he's wearing is a crewneck sweatshirt (from his own label Kent & Curwen), jeans, and a watch. But the sweatshirt stands out just a bit, and the jeans are perfectly distressed. Small details like those make a big difference.

7| Don't forget the power of a double-breasted suit. And if you're bored with brown and black shoes, oxblood is a polished upgrade.

8| Beckham's style obviously leans into the athletic universe (soccer and all that), but he always finds a way to make it cool. A long-hem Adidas jacket is one way to do it.

9| Be excited! Wear bright red hats and gum-sole sneakers! (And keep good stock of slim denim and puffer jackets.)

10| Here's an example of how having a reliably good sense of style allows you to take risks others might not pull off. Trucker hats are certainly not for everybody.
