David Beckham Just Schooled Us All (Again) on How to Get Dressed

He showed up to Wimbledon looking like a proper legend.

Serena Williams, Rafa Nadal, and Roger Federer may be duking it out on the famous grass courts of the All England Club in Wimbledon, but the real battle at this iconic tennis Grand Slam takes place in the stands. This is where the rich and famous go toe-to-toe in a sartorial showdown for that most coveted of all awards, Best Dressed. And right now, as so often happens during Wimbledon, the man to beat is one David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE.

It’s no surprise, really, since we’ve been waxing lyrical over Becks’s style for more than a decade (impressive for a man who came out of the gate wearing matchy-matchy all-leather with his wife). But the simple fact is, time and time again Sir Beckham perfectly illustrates how a grown man should dress. And this particular occasion can best be described as “upscale summer.”

Think of this as your go-to summer wedding look, or a look for any occasion where you have to dress up during the warmer months. What we have is a classic sport jacket/trouser combo (an ensemble made famous by style god Fred Astaire), with a khaki linen patch pocket jacket, tailored to perfection of course, and a pair of gray tweed trousers. Tweed being doable for an English summer, but if you’re somewhere more swelter-y, consider tropical weight wool.

Becks then caps things off with a blue striped contrast collar shirt, a navy club tie, and a navy and white check pocket square. Notice the mix of blues here. With earth tones like khaki and gray, blue is the perfect complementing color for basically any skin tone/hair type out there. You could go bolder, but why would you when you can look this good. He also mixes patterns, but just enough to add visual texture, not in a way that will give his seat mates vertigo.

This is an A+ style move for all seasons—for winter, simply replace the linen jacket with tweed or corduroy—and should be a staple for the dressier section of your closet.
