This Limited Edition Omega Speedmaster Celebrates 10 Years of Hodinkee
This year, renowned wristwatch and horology publication Hodinkee celebrates 10 years since its inception in 2008. To commemorate its tenth anniversary, the publication has teamed up with Omega for a beautiful, limited edition Speedmaster with a significant story behind it.
Specifically, this Speedmaster is inspired by a watch that in its own way, led to the birth of Hodinkee. Check it out:
The Omega Speedmaster Hodinkee 10th Anniversary Limited Edition—or the H10 Speedmaster, for short—features a hand-wound Omega caliber 1861 three-register chronograph movement inside the original 39.7mm case of the reference 2998. It also has more unique design features: a blue-gray dial (instead of black) with a yellow-tipped seconds hand (inspired by the Speedmasters of the 70s) and a set of registers with bold colors (half-blue, half-black; and black with red arrow hands). It comes with two straps, one of which is a dark gray calfskin strap with side-stitching—a vintage style that Clymer believes was re-popularized by Hodinkee.
The clincher, though, is that apart from looking incredible, this particular Speedmaster has a special backstory too. It was inspired by the MK40 triple calendar Speedmaster handed down to Clymer by his grandfather, whom he considers to be the inspiration for his love of watches. "He was a veteran, an entrepreneur, and to me, just the coolest guy in the world," writes Clymer in his introduction of the watch. "And while he wore other watches in his younger years, it was this Omega chronograph that I remember him wearing throughout my adolescence."
Further down, Clymer recounts memories of his grandfather lending him that Speedmaster, until he was eventually allowed to keep it. "There wasn't any great fanfare or to-do, he just wanted me to have it," he says. "He knew how much I appreciated mechanical things, and I'm sure he knew how much he meant to me, even back then. And that Speedmaster MK40 has been with me ever since."
In honor of that MK40, Hodinkee has revealed this anniversary model—limited to 500 pieces and ready for purchase now, with deliveries expected to begin by November. It retails for $6,500, so if you have that much cash to drip now, head over to the Hodinkee online store to join the waitlist.
