5 Simple Ways To Upgrade Your Style In 2019
Curse New Year and its resolutions. Why must I change? Why must I carve out a beach bod? Why must I strive to be a better, nicer, more humane individual?
Because, reader, change is good. Especially when it concerns your personal style. While it's easy to rest on your Oxford shirts and slimline jeans of yesteryear (and they're a very good place to rest, believe us), 2019 presents a wealth of new things to try. Louis Vuitton's big on the Big Lovely Coat thing. Dries Van Noten is keen to keep things boxy. Dior too, in all its Kim Jones metallic glory, is taking our clothes into the future.
Here, we've listed five minor switches that'll make major improvements in your style this year.
1| Spin The Color Wheel

Look, monochrome is too easy. That's not say black and white (and the grays in-between) are redundant. It just means that you can lift the standard palette with a few choice shades.
Picking the right one however, is the tricky part. So take cue from Prada, who injected its S/S19 collection with shades from across the spectrum: jewel tones (which are far easier to meld with the darkness) and brighter shades too (a good overlayer to diamond whites). Whatever the choice, it's sure to brighten the standard New Year melancholy.
2| Have A Clear Out
Oh, what's that? Hoarding is bad? Thanks for the sage advice, Marie Kondo. Still, while the art of tidying is hardly rocket science, it's easy to hold onto threads you don't need.
Clear it out. Rather than grab something and expect a wave of pure unbridled joy without the aid of narcotics, ask yourself this: When do I wear it, when will I wear it, and what will it be worn with. If you can answer all three confidently, hang tight.
Clothes alone may not be joyful. But post-office beers in your finest jacket most certainly is.
3| Make A Statement

'Statements' are fine for fashion week, trickier for a day at the office. Trickier, but not impossible.
Case in point, the Big Lovely Statement Coat. But instead of out-there metallics, fluoros, or left-field prints, play it safer with checks, or a block color. Perhaps, even, a little bit oversized. Small switch, big impact: You 2.0.
4| Go Boxy
See that tight little T-shirt and crotch-choking skinny jean, mocking you from the back of the wardrobe with their rendition of The Kooks' 'She Moves In Her Own Way'? Leave them there: the super slim is a trend most positively, refreshingly dead.
That means go boxy. Not Balenciaga, Kanye West 'I Love It' boxy. But squarer, like French breakout label Jacquemus. More room in the shoulders. Perhaps a looser leg on your next pair of trousers. Not only will you be more comfortable, but it's an easy way to clock up your style cred. And preserve your sperm count.
5| Accessories Are Your Friend

If you're without a watch, you've clearly not been following Esquire. But you should. Because we're also keen to espouse the virtues of other accessories—finer details that take a look from mediocre to memorable.
We're not saying you opt for fistfuls of Milanese taxi driver gold (which is cool in its own way, should that be your thing). Instead, think abouta simple ring, a bracelet, even a tie pin to refresh your usual rotation. Big jewels optional. But something—anything—extra is essential for 2019.
