Lenny Kravitz's Oscars Look Has Folks All Hot and Bothered

The song "Fly Away" was released on Lenny Kravitz's fifth full-length studio album—named 5, because of course—in May of 1998. That means it's just shy of 25 years old at this point. Have you watched the music video recently? You should. It is, first of all, a towering testament to the optimism and excess of late '90s music video-making. But it's also a crucial bit of context for this evening.

Because this evening, also known as the night of the 95th Academy Awards, Kravitz hit the Oscars red carpet decked out in the sort of look he's been rocking for a while now: pointy boots topped with flowing flared trousers and a shirt that puts the focus firmly on his impressively toned torso (actually, it might be a jumpsuit, but either way). He looks very much the part of the '70s-inspired rock star in his Saint Laurent outfit and Jaeger-LeCoultre watch. He also looks a whole lot like the guy in the "Fly Away" video, save for a little more scruff on the chin and cheeks and dreadlocks instead of a cropped Afro atop his head.

It seems that Kravitz may well have done one of those crossroads style deals back in the '90s. But instead of selling his soul to the devil so he could play guitar, he earned the ability to tune in an expertly crafted riff by trading in is ability to age. Like, on a cellular level. The folks on Twitter are getting all hot and bothered about it, and, honestly, we get it. As our friends at Men's Health noted in their 2020 cover story on Kravitz, "The most effective way to stay perennially cool is to never visibly age, if you can pull it off."

Kravitz can. As for the rest of us? If only.
