The Pattern Clash of Louis Vuitton’s Hot New Collab Is What We Need Now

Pattern clash on denim and a yellow-billed duck—these things totally make sense in a topsy-turvy reality. For his first collaboration under Louis Vuitton, artistic director Virgil Abloh teams up with Japanese designer Nigo to create an out-of-this-world capsule of clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories.

Nigo is a giant in the world of streetwear, having founded A Bathing Ape, Billionaire Boys Club (together with Pharrell Williams), and also Human Made, the label that Louis Vuitton partners with for this collection. In other words, he’s a certified cool person and, for Abloh, also a mentor

An Unmissable New Pattern on Double Denim

That connection resulted in a successful collaboration, whose highlight is a new pattern that demands attention. For the set, the Paris fashion house combines two of its most recognizable emblems, the Monogram pattern and the Damier check, in a cut-and-sew way reminiscent of a patchwork quilt. And when applied on denim—that durable  Americana fabric—the mutant print feels familiar and nostalgic, softening the strong look.

Still, wearing the jacket, the shirt, the pants, and the bucket hat all at once is an advanced move, so take care. That Duck and Sweet New Logo

Elsewhere, there is more fun in the form of a duck. Officially called the LV Made duck, the bird is a re-interpretation of Nigo’s Human Made duck. You can get it as a figure (to keep as a pet?) or printed on a coin purse, an earphone holder, a wallet, or a keychain. The quacker is animated on the dial of the Tambour Horizon watch, as well.

There’s a sweet new logo, too. The LV², the collection’s moniker that Nigo came up with for his team up with Abloh, is found prominently as the pendant of a gold necklace or quietly as embroidery on the back of a white shirt. Yes, there are essentials in the vibrant collection.

The sober stuff—the grown-up things like suits and trousers—is what you’re not seeing on this page. Which is okay because what we really need now is a dose of fun.
