The Margielyn Didal x New Balance Sneaker Collab Is Inspired by a Cebuano Delicacy

New Balance is covering all the bases when it comes to collaborations. From a much-hyped Teddy Santis partnership to a surprise appearance in Miu Miu's latest fashion show, the American athletic company is quite literally leaving no stone unturned. And, now, that includes the Philippines with another collab with Olympic skateboarder Margielyn Didal.

For Didal, the collab is a full circle moment. She previously linked up with New Balance for her (memorable) stint at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo as she sported Margie Didal Pro NM379 'Pilipinas' Sneakers. Meanwhile, the new sneaker collab is inspired by a Cebu delicacy called puso—a delicacy she used to sell as a kid.

In the video campaign, Didal explains how the sneaker is inspired by puso. The coconut leaf wrapping is translated on the sides of the pair with a woven motif. The texture is so similar to the wrapping that she says it almost feels like she's holding the delicacy.

"Who thought selling the Filipino rice snack known as 'puso' next to a skatepark in Cebu, Philippines would change Margie’s life forever? Now we get to celebrate her #NM272," New Balance said in a statement.
