Esquire's Cheat Sheet to Color Combinations for the Stylish Gentleman in Need
Along with fit, the most important part of putting together a winning outfit is in your choice of colour. But while taking risks is to be commended (well done), sometimes a look calls for the tried and tested approach.
Timeless and good for all seasons, here we've selected five rock solid color pairings that you can reach for in those stylish times of need.
NAVY AND BLACK
When it comes to a thinking man's downtime uniform, you can't go wrong with dark blue and black.
As a general rule, this works best when your base is black while your top half stays navy. So black jeans paired with a navy bomber, as opposed to navy chinos and a black overcoat.
CAMEL AND GRAY
Whether you're wearing a slick camel shirt on top of your signature charcoal tee or pairing a cashmere sweater over flannel trousers, camel and gray are the best of style pairing friends.
Neutral and yet a little bit daring, camel needs the right base to really shine, a job that darker shades of gray will perform gladly.
GREEN AND BURGUNDY
If you're looking to break free of the black, gray, and navy (although we can help you there) shackles of the suiting world, then green is a great jumping off point. But how do you accessorize without going overboard?
Burgundy, friends. Burgundy.
A more contemporary option than brown leather; a derby or monkstrap in red leather matches well with dark green tailoring. While a square knit tie in the same shade of rouge is a stylish move against the blank canvas of a crisp white shirt.
BLACK AND BLACK
An ever-present aesthetic for the achingly trendy, the key with black on black is to play around with your fit and fibres, making it the perfect platform to try out that oversized jumper or those wide leg trousers you've been coveting.
As well as fit, the blacked out look also lends itself to upscale sportswear, the kind will never, ever be exposed to a single bead of sweat.
WHITE AND STONE
A simple, modern and stylish combo for the warmer months: white and stone gray is a real humdinger; whether you're pairing a stone cotton mac against a fresh white shirt, or instead opting for a plain Tee on top of a light gray shade of chino.
